The flame sensor is a single metal rod positioned directly in the burner flame that verifies, through flame rectification, that the gas has truly ignited. The control board reads the small microamp current the rod conducts and uses it to decide whether to hold the gas valve open. When the rod's tip oxidizes, carbons over, or cracks, the board loses sight of the flame and immediately closes the gas valve as a safety measure. To a homeowner this looks like a furnace that fires for a few seconds and then quits — short-cycling — often cycling several times before it locks out and leaves the house cold. A dirty or failed flame sensor is the most common cause of intermittent no-heat calls.
