The hot surface igniter is what lights your furnace. On a call for heat, line voltage energizes the igniter until it glows white-hot, then the gas valve opens and the burners ignite off its surface. When the element cracks or weakens, you'll hear the inducer and gas valve cycle but get no ignition — no glow, sometimes faint clicking, and ultimately no heat as the furnace locks out. Hot surface igniters are brittle and degrade with every heating cycle, so they're a leading no-heat failure. This igniter is matched to the PG8UAA024045ADJA furnace, supplied as either silicon carbide or the more durable silicon nitride element depending on the platform. Silicon carbide igniters typically read about 40-90 ohms cold; silicon nitride units read lower and tolerate more on/off cycles and thermal shock. A reading near infinite/open ohms confirms a cracked, failed element. OEM matters because the resistance and mass are engineered to reach ignition temperature in the time window your control board expects. A generic igniter with the wrong resistance won't glow hot enough (or fast enough) to light the gas before the board times out — causing repeat lockouts — or it draws too much current and burns out prematurely.
