The control transformer steps your incoming 120V line voltage down to the 24V low-voltage power that runs the thermostat, control board logic, gas valve, and contactor relays. It is the single source of low-voltage power for the entire control circuit. When it fails, the furnace goes completely dead at a thermostat call — no inducer, no igniter, no blower — and the thermostat screen may go blank if it's powered from the furnace 'C' terminal. A transformer that has been shorted by a pinched thermostat wire often blows its internal fuse or hums loudly and runs hot before quitting entirely. Specs: this is a Class 2, 120V primary / 24V secondary transformer rated at 40 VA, the standard capacity for a single-stage gas furnace with a 24V gas valve and relay loads. The 40 VA rating provides the inrush headroom the gas valve and board relays need; undersizing causes voltage sag and dropped relays under load.
