The hot surface igniter (HSI) is the component that lights the gas burners on your Carrier PG8MAA. On a call for heat, the control board sends 120 VAC to the igniter, which glows bright orange (roughly 2000-2500°F) so that when the gas valve opens, the burners light instantly. Igniters are brittle and are the most common no-heat failure: when one cracks or burns open you get cold air, repeated clicking or relay chatter, or a furnace that runs the inducer and blower but never produces heat — usually ending in a hard lockout after several failed ignition attempts.
