The flame sensor (flame rod) is a single metal rod that sits directly in the burner flame and uses flame rectification to prove the burner is actually lit. After the igniter glows and the gas valve opens, the control board looks for a tiny microamp current flowing through this rod; if it doesn't see that current, the board shuts the gas off within seconds for safety. A dirty or failed flame sensor is the #1 cause of a furnace that lights for 3-5 seconds then shuts off and short-cycles — you'll feel a brief puff of warm air, then nothing, often repeating several times before the board locks out into a no-heat fault. Specs: The sensor is a high-temp stainless/Kanthal rod mounted on a ceramic insulator with a single spade terminal.
