The transformer converts 120V line voltage to 24V AC, powering every low-voltage component in the system — including the control board, thermostat circuit, gas valve coil, and inducer relay. When it fails, the result is typically a completely unresponsive furnace: the thermostat calls for heat but nothing happens, the control board shows no activity, or the system trips a low-voltage fuse repeatedly.
