The flame sensor is a single metal rod that confirms your Carrier PG8MAA furnace has actually lit. After the igniter glows and the gas valve opens, the control board sends a tiny microamp current through the flame to this rod (flame rectification). When the rod is coated, cracked, or has drifted out of position, the board sees no flame, shuts the gas valve within seconds, and locks out. The tell-tale symptom: the furnace lights for 3–7 seconds, then shuts off and tries again, short-cycling and eventually blowing cold air. It's one of the most common no-heat callbacks. This is a single-rod sensor (not a thermocouple — it carries no voltage of its own) mounted in the burner flame path with a high-temperature ceramic insulator and a 1/4" spade or molex connector. A healthy sensor passes current to ground only through flame; a good flame-current signal is typically 1–6 microamps DC. A reading that creeps below ~0.5 µA means it's time to clean or replace. Generic rods often use thinner metal that oxidizes faster and ceramic that cracks, so you're back to short-cycling within a season.
