The flame sensor is a single metal rod that sits in the burner flame and confirms the burners actually lit. It works by flame rectification — the flame conducts a tiny microamp current that tells the control board "flame present, keep the gas valve open." When the rod gets coated with oxide or carbon, that current drops and the board can no longer prove flame, so it closes the gas valve within seconds. The classic symptom: the furnace lights, runs 3-7 seconds, then shuts off and short-cycles or locks out — never delivering steady heat. This is an OEM single-rod flame sensor with a stainless/Kanthal sensing rod and a high-temperature ceramic insulator, sized and bent to seat correctly in the PG8MAA burner assembly. A healthy sensor reads a flame-rectification current in the 2-6 microamp range; below roughly 0.5-1 µA the board will fault on flame failure. The rod material and ceramic insulator matter. A genuine Carrier sensor uses an insulator rated for sustained burner-box temperatures so it won't crack and leak current to ground. Generic rods often use lower-grade ceramic that fails early, plus an incorrect rod length or bend that mis-positions the tip in the flame — producing a weak signal and repeat short-cycling. Install difficulty: 1/5. Tools: 1/4" nut driver, fine emery cloth or steel wool, multimeter (microamp scale).
