The hot surface igniter (HSI) is what lights the burners in your Carrier PG8MAA packaged unit. On each call for heat the control board sends voltage to the igniter, it glows to over 1,800°F, and the gas valve then opens to light off the burners. Igniters are a wear item — repeated thermal cycling makes them brittle until they finally crack.
