The pressure switch is a safety interlock that proves the inducer (draft) motor is actually pulling combustion gases through the heat exchanger and out the vent before the furnace is allowed to fire. On a heat call the inducer spins up and creates negative pressure; the switch senses that vacuum through its hose and closes, giving the control board permission to energize the igniter and gas valve. If the switch fails, or a blocked vent/condensate line prevents proper draft, the board never gets that proof signal. The furnace then runs the inducer, waits, and shuts down — leaving the home with no heat and often a flashing fault code. This is a diaphragm-actuated negative-pressure switch with a calibrated trip point measured in inches of water column (typically around -0.40 to -0.60" WC for this furnace class). The OEM switch is matched to your model's draft characteristics and altitude rating so it closes and opens at exactly the right vacuum. Generic pressure switches often ship with a slightly different set point or a weaker diaphragm spring.
