The flame sensor is a single-rod safety device that confirms your burners have actually lit. It generates a tiny microamp signal through flame rectification, and the control board keeps the gas valve open only while it detects that real current. When the rod becomes coated with oxidation or carbon, or the element itself degrades, the board can no longer "see" the flame and shuts the gas valve within seconds as a safety measure.
