The flame sensor is a single metal rod that sits directly in the burner flame and confirms — through flame rectification — that the burners actually lit after the igniter fired. The control board reads a tiny microamp current passing through the flame. When the rod oxidizes or its porcelain insulator cracks, the board can no longer 'see' the flame and shuts the gas valve within seconds as a safety. The classic symptom is burners that light for 3-7 seconds and then go out, with the furnace short-cycling — light, drop, retry, lockout — leaving the home with little or no heat. Specs: This is a flame-rectification rod, not a thermocouple. A clean sensor in a healthy flame should pass roughly 1-6 microamps DC (measured in series with a meter set to µA); below about 0.5-1 µA the board will drop the flame and close the gas valve.
