The hot surface igniter is the part that actually lights your gas burners on every heating cycle. When the control board calls for heat it energizes the igniter with 120 volts; it glows white-hot, around 2000°F, and ignites the gas at the burners. As the element ages and develops micro-cracks, ignition becomes unreliable or stops entirely. The classic symptoms are an inducer that spins up and a gas valve that clicks but no flame, repeated ignition retries, a multi-flash lockout code on the control board, and cold air blowing from the vents with no heat. A marginal igniter may glow weakly and cause delayed, rumbling "whoomp" ignitions. This igniter is designed for 120 VAC operation and matched to the Carrier/Bryant control on this furnace. Silicon nitride elements (tougher and more shock-resistant) typically measure a cold resistance near 11 to 50 ohms; silicon carbide elements read higher, roughly 40 to 90 ohms.
