The flame sensor proves that a flame is actually burning after your Carrier PG8JAA furnace ignites. It uses flame rectification to send a tiny microamp current back to the control board; if the board doesn't detect that current, it immediately closes the gas valve so raw gas can't accumulate. As the sensing rod fouls with carbon and oxide over time, the signal weakens and the furnace begins short-cycling — burners light for a few seconds, the flame signal drops below threshold, the valve closes, and the unit retries. After three or four failed tries the board locks out and you get cold air from the registers, repeated ignition clicking, and a furnace that runs without heating. This is a stainless steel Kanthal-style sensing rod on a ceramic insulator, built to sit continuously in the burner flame. A clean, healthy sensor reads roughly 1-6 microamps with a meter wired in series on the DC microamp scale; readings under about 0.5 µA will be rejected by the board. The bracket and single spade terminal match the OEM Carrier/Bryant mounting. Why OEM matters: aftermarket sensors frequently use thinner or lower-grade rod alloy that oxidizes faster, so the rectified signal degrades and you get nuisance lockouts within a heating season.
