The hot surface igniter is the glow element that lights the gas burners on every call for heat. When the thermostat calls, the control board sends 120V to the igniter, it glows white-hot (roughly 2000°F+), and the gas valve opens so the flame catches. When the element cracks or its resistance drifts out of range, it can no longer reach light-off temperature — you get cold air from the vents, repeated clicking or relay cycling, and eventually a hard lockout with no heat. A visibly cracked or sectioned igniter is the single most common no-heat failure in these furnaces. This OEM igniter is a silicon carbide (SiC) hot surface element with a nominal cold resistance in the ~40–75 ohm range — verify against your unit's spec. SiC reaches light-off temperature quickly on 120V and is matched to the Carrier ignition-sequence timing. The ceramic block, mounting tab, and connector are OEM-spec so the element indexes to the correct position over the burner. (If your furnace was built with a silicon nitride element, match material to your board's drive.) Igniter resistance is everything. Generic igniters frequently run resistance outside spec — too high and it never glows hot enough to ignite the gas; too low and it draws excess current and burns out prematurely. Cheaper SiC castings are also more brittle and crack from thermal cycling.
