The hot surface igniter is the glow element that lights the gas burners on every call for heat. When the thermostat calls, the control board sends 120V to the igniter, it glows white-hot (roughly 2000°F+), and the gas valve opens so the flame catches. When the element cracks or its resistance drifts out of range, it can no longer reach light-off temperature — you get cold air from the vents, repeated clicking or relay cycling, and eventually a hard lockout with no heat.
