The flame sensor is a thin metal rod positioned directly in the burner flame that verifies ignition through flame rectification — a small microamp current travels through the flame to ground and signals the control board that the burners are lit. When the rod fouls with oxide or carbon, or its ceramic insulator cracks, the board loses that signal and shuts the gas valve within seconds to prevent unburned gas from accumulating. Homeowners experience this as short-cycling: the burners light for a few seconds, then go out, often repeating several times before the furnace locks out and stops producing heat altogether.
