The pressure switch is the safety device that proves your Carrier PG8JAA package unit has proper venting before it will allow ignition. When the draft inducer motor starts, it creates negative pressure that pulls a small hose on the switch closed; only then does the control board energize the igniter and gas valve. This prevents the unit from firing into a blocked flue or with a failed inducer — a carbon-monoxide safeguard. When the switch or its tubing fails, the board can't prove draft and refuses to light: no heat, an inducer that runs but never ignites, and a diagnostic LED flashing a 'pressure switch open/closed' fault. A switch stuck open from a clogged port, cracked hose, or condensate-blocked tube is the most common cause. This is a normally-open, negative-pressure diaphragm switch with a specific trip set-point measured in inches of water column (e.g., −0.40" to −0.70" w.c., model-dependent). Continuity reads open at rest and closes when the inducer pulls vacuum. A pressure switch is a calibrated safety, not a generic on/off switch.
