The flame sensor is a single metal rod that sits in the burner flame and confirms — through flame rectification — that your Carrier PG8JAA package unit actually lit. The control board sends a small AC signal down the rod; a real flame conducts a tiny DC microamp current back, telling the board to keep the gas valve open. When the rod oxidizes or its insulator cracks, the board can no longer 'see' the flame: the burners light for a few seconds, then the gas valve snaps shut. The classic symptom is short-cycling on a call for heat — ignition, brief flame, shutdown, retry — often ending in a hard lockout and no heat, with a diagnostic LED flashing a flame-sense fault.
