The hot surface igniter glows red-hot at the start of every heat cycle to light the burners. When it cracks, weakens, or ages out, you get no ignition and no heat: the inducer motor spins up, you hear the gas valve click open, but the burners never catch — and after two or three failed tries the control board locks the furnace out. An element that's visibly cracked, white-spotted, or no longer glows on a call for heat is the dead giveaway. Carrier furnaces in this family commonly use a 120V silicon carbide igniter, with a cold resistance typically in the 40–75 ohm range measured at the connector with a multimeter. Silicon carbide is the traditional material — bright and hot but brittle. Some replacements upgrade to silicon nitride, which is more shock-resistant and draws less current, but you must match the voltage, mounting bracket, and connector to your unit. An open (infinite) resistance reading means the element is fractured internally. OEM matters because resistance sets the surface temperature. A generic igniter with the wrong resistance won't glow hot enough to ignite gas reliably, leading to delayed ignition, rough light-off "poofs," or repeated lockouts; cheaper elements also fracture sooner under thermal cycling.
