The flame sensor is a single metal rod seated directly in the burner flame, and its only job is to prove the burners actually lit using a process called flame rectification. The control board reads a tiny microamp current passing through the flame; when the rod gets coated with oxidation or carbon, that signal drops and the board closes the gas valve as a safety. The classic symptom is a furnace that lights for a few seconds, then shuts down, and repeats every minute or two — short-cycling on flame loss that leaves you with little or no heat, often on the coldest mornings. The board's diagnostic LED will usually flash a flame-sense or lockout code. Carrier OEM flame sensors use a stainless/Kanthal rod on a ceramic insulator, with a specific rod length and bracket so the tip lands in the right part of the flame envelope. A healthy sensor reads roughly 1–6 microamps of flame current; below about 0.5 µA the board drops out. The insulator should measure open to ground. Match the rod length and connector to your PG8DAA unit. OEM matters because geometry and metallurgy are exact. Generic rods often use thinner or differently-alloyed metal that oxidizes faster, sit at the wrong flame height, or carry weaker ceramic that cracks and shorts to ground — all causing repeat nuisance lockouts.
