HVAC Diagnostic Guide HIGH URGENCY

AC Not Responding to Thermostat

Thermostat is set to COOL and shows a call for cooling, but the AC doesn't turn on.

Quick Check Before You Call a Pro

  1. Verify thermostat display shows cooling call (snowflake icon or 'cooling' indicator)
  2. Replace thermostat batteries — low battery causes weak signals
  3. Check breaker for AC unit — may have tripped without you noticing
  4. Find the float switch in the indoor unit's drain pan — may be tripped

01 · Most Likely Causes (Ranked)

30%

Blown Control Board Fuse

What's happening

A small automotive-style fuse (typically 3A or 5A) on the furnace control board protects the 24V circuit. Blown fuse = no power to thermostat = no AC control. Common after a shorted thermostat wire or power surge.

How to check

Power off furnace at the breaker. Open the control panel. Look for a small blade fuse on the board. Pull and inspect — burned filament = blown.

How to fix

Replace with same amperage (NEVER higher — wire is sized for that amp limit). Fuse is $1-3. If it blows again immediately, find the wiring short causing it.

25%

Tripped Float Switch (Clogged Drain)

What's happening

Float switch in the drain pan detected water and shut off the AC to prevent ceiling damage. The thermostat shows a call but the system never responds because the safety switch cut power.

How to check

Locate the indoor air handler's drain pan. Look for water in the pan and a small plastic device with two wires (float switch). Float in UP position = tripped.

How to fix

Clear the drain line with wet/dry vac at outdoor end OR pour 1 cup white vinegar in the indoor access port. Drain the pan. Float will reset to DOWN position. System should respond again.

15%

Failed 24V Transformer

What's happening

Without 24V power, the thermostat can call all day and nothing will respond. Transformer fails from age, power surges, or a shorted thermostat wire.

How to check

Multimeter test at thermostat terminals R and C. Should show 24-28V AC. Zero volts = dead transformer.

How to fix

Replace transformer. Match VA rating (40VA for residential typical). $25-50 part. Located inside the furnace/air handler.

Failed Contactor (Stuck Open)

What's happening

Outdoor unit contactor's coil failed open. Even with valid 24V signal from thermostat, it won't engage to start the compressor.

How to check

Multimeter check at contactor coil terminals during a cooling call. Should show 24V AC. If voltage is present but contactor doesn't pull in, coil is failed.

How to fix

Replace contactor matching coil voltage and amp rating. $20-50 part.

Shorted Thermostat Wire

What's happening

Damaged wire shorting between conductors (or to ground) confuses the control board. Common after rodent damage, construction, or recent service. Often blows the control board fuse.

How to check

Pull thermostat off the wall plate. Inspect wires for damage. Look at the wire run for any obvious damage in attics or basements.

How to fix

Replace damaged wire section or run new thermostat cable (18/5 or 18/8). Job for a tech if wire is inside finished walls.

8%

Failed Thermostat

What's happening

Thermostat shows a call but doesn't actually send the 24V signal to the Y (cooling) terminal. Internal relay or microprocessor failure.

How to check

At the furnace control board, manually short R to Y with an insulated jumper. If AC starts running, thermostat is bad.

How to fix

Replace thermostat. $20-200 part depending on model.

02 · Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my thermostat working but AC not turning on?
Thermostat display works because it has its own power (24V from transformer OR batteries). But the cooling call signal isn't getting to the outdoor unit. Most common: tripped float switch, blown control board fuse, failed contactor.
Can I jump the thermostat to test the AC?
Yes — at the furnace control board (NOT at the thermostat), jumper R to Y with a piece of wire. This bypasses the thermostat entirely. If AC starts, thermostat is the problem. If not, problem is downstream.
What is the float switch in my AC?
A safety switch in the drain pan that cuts power to the AC when water rises too high (indicating a clogged drain). Prevents ceiling water damage. Often the cause of 'AC won't start' when thermostat is fine.
Why does my new thermostat not control the AC?
Most common new-thermostat issue: wrong wire connections. The Y wire (yellow, usually) controls cooling. Verify it's connected to the Y terminal on the new thermostat, not C or some other terminal.
