HVAC Diagnostic Guide HIGH URGENCY

Thermostat Blank or Not Working

Thermostat display is blank, frozen, or completely unresponsive.

Quick Check Before You Call a Pro

  1. Replace batteries — easiest first check (most use 2x AA)
  2. Check for a tripped breaker labeled "furnace" or "air handler"
  3. Look for the indoor float switch — if tripped, it can cut power to the thermostat too
  4. Check the small fuse on the furnace control board (usually 3 or 5 amp blade fuse)

01 · Most Likely Causes (Ranked)

40%

Dead Batteries

What's happening

Battery-powered thermostats die when batteries deplete. Some show LOW BATTERY warnings for weeks first, others just go blank.

How to check

Pull the thermostat off its wall plate. Visible battery compartment? Replace with fresh AA or AAA (whatever it takes).

How to fix

Install fresh batteries. Some thermostats need 60 seconds without batteries to fully reset before new ones go in.

Blown Control Board Fuse

What's happening

The furnace control board has a small replaceable fuse (typically 3A or 5A) protecting the low-voltage circuit. Power surge, miswiring, or shorted thermostat wire blows it.

How to check

Power off the furnace at the breaker. Open the lower panel. Look for a small automotive-style blade fuse on the control board. Pull it and inspect — burned filament inside = blown.

How to fix

Replace with exact same amperage fuse. NEVER substitute higher amperage. If it blows again immediately, you have a thermostat wire shorted to ground somewhere — trace the wire run.

15%

Tripped Float Switch (Cut Power to Thermostat)

What's happening

On some installations, the float switch is wired in series with the thermostat's 24V power. Trip the switch (clogged drain) and the thermostat goes dark too.

How to check

Locate the indoor air handler's drain pan and float switch. Look for water in the pan. The float should be DOWN — if it's UP, it's tripped.

How to fix

Clear the clogged drain line. Drain the pan. Reset the float by lowering it. Thermostat power should restore.

10%

Tripped Breaker

What's happening

Power to the furnace tripped at the breaker. Without power to the air handler, the 24V transformer can't power the thermostat.

How to check

Check breaker panel for an air handler or furnace breaker. May appear slightly out of line.

How to fix

Reset the breaker. If it trips again, you have a fault — call a pro.

5%

Loose or Broken Thermostat Wire

What's happening

Vibration over years can loosen low-voltage wire connections. Less commonly, wires get damaged (during construction, by rodents, etc.).

How to check

Pull the thermostat off its wall plate. Visually check that all wires are firmly seated in their terminals. Look for any wires hanging loose.

How to fix

Reseat loose wires. For broken wires inside walls, run new low-voltage thermostat cable (18/5 minimum, 18/8 better) — a job for a tech.

5%

Failed Transformer

What's happening

The 24V transformer that powers thermostat and control circuits has failed. Without 24V, thermostat is dead.

How to check

Multimeter test at the thermostat terminals. Should read 24-28V AC between R and C. If 0V, the transformer is suspect. Visual: bulged, burnt, smelly.

How to fix

Replace transformer. Match VA rating (usually 40VA for residential). $25-50 part.

02 · Frequently Asked Questions

How do I reset a thermostat?
Most thermostats: pull off the wall plate to disconnect power, wait 30 seconds, reattach. Battery-powered: remove batteries for 60 seconds, reinstall. Smart thermostats often have a software factory-reset in the menu.
Why is my thermostat screen blank but the AC still runs?
If the AC kicks on automatically (via outdoor sensors or stuck contactor) without a thermostat call, that's a different problem — likely a stuck contactor or wiring short. The blank thermostat is separate, usually dead batteries or blown control board fuse.
What does it mean when a thermostat shows 'LO BAT' or 'BATT'?
Battery voltage has dropped below the threshold needed for reliable operation. The thermostat will fully die within days to weeks. Replace batteries immediately.
Can a clogged AC drain make my thermostat go blank?
Yes, in some installations. If your float switch is wired in series with the thermostat's R wire, a tripped float (from a clogged drain) cuts power to the thermostat entirely. Common in attic-mounted units.

⚠ Safety notice: This guide is for informational purposes only. HVAC systems involve high-voltage electricity, refrigerants under pressure, and natural gas — all of which can cause serious injury, death, or property damage. Refrigerant handling requires EPA Section 608 certification by federal law. When in doubt, contact a licensed HVAC professional.
