HVAC systems rely on electric motors to move air through ductwork and across condenser coils. PSC (Permanent Split Capacitor) motors are the traditional type found in most residential systems. They use a run capacitor and operate at fixed speeds. ECM (Electronically Commutated Motor) motors are variable-speed, more energy efficient, and quieter. ECM motors cost more but can reduce electricity consumption by 50-70% compared to PSC motors. When replacing, match the motor type unless upgrading from PSC to ECM for efficiency gains.
OEM motors are the exact replacement specified by the equipment manufacturer with matching mounting brackets and wiring. Universal motors match the horsepower, speed, rotation, and shaft dimensions but use a standard mounting configuration.
