The high-pressure switch opens the control circuit if discharge pressure climbs to an unsafe level — typically caused by a dirty condenser coil, failed condenser fan, or overcharge — protecting the compressor from rupture. The low-pressure switch opens on a loss of charge or a restricted line, preventing the compressor from running dry.
