This OEM high-pressure switch (part number 1184656) is a refrigerant-side safety control for the Tempstar TCA748GKA100 air conditioning condensing unit. The switch monitors discharge-line pressure and opens the 24V control circuit when system pressure climbs above its factory trip point, shutting down the compressor before damage can occur. High head pressure is most often caused by a dirty condenser coil, a failing condenser fan motor, overcharge, or a blocked liquid line. When the switch trips repeatedly, or fails closed and never protects the system, the compressor is at risk. A switch that fails open will lock the unit out and prevent cooling entirely.
