When the thermostat calls for heat, the control board energizes this igniter, which heats to over 2,000°F to light the gas burners. The integrated flame-sensing function then confirms a stable flame so the gas valve stays open. A failed or cracked igniter is one of the most common causes of furnace no-heat calls.
