Unlike a standard silicon-carbide igniter, this silicon-nitride HSP unit both ignites the burners and serves as the flame sensor, confirming flame is present so the control board keeps the gas valve open. Because it handles ignition and sensing, a failure can show up as no ignition at all or as the furnace lighting and then shutting down within seconds (flame sense fault). Silicon-nitride elements are more durable than silicon-carbide but still degrade over time.
