On a call for heat the control board sends line voltage to the igniter, which glows white-hot to light the burners, then doubles as a flame-proving element on this combined ignitor/sensor design. The silicon nitride element is more durable and resistant to thermal shock than older silicon carbide igniters. When this part fails, the furnace blower may run but the burners never light, producing no heat and often a lockout fault after several ignition retries.
