When the thermostat calls for heat, the control board energizes the igniter, which glows to roughly 2,000°F to light the burners. This silicon-nitride style HSI is more durable and shock-resistant than older silicon-carbide igniters and also serves the sensing function on this platform. A failed igniter is the single most common cause of a furnace that will not light: you hear the inducer and gas valve cycle, but the burners never ignite, often ending in a lockout after several trial-for-ignition attempts.
