Overview

This genuine Tempstar OEM hot surface igniter (part 1172533, "IGNITOR HSI") ignites the burners on the T8MPN050B12B1 gas furnace and is paired here with the Honeywell snap-mount gas valve (part 1172821, "VALVE N HSI SNAP HW VR8205S"). The hot surface igniter glows orange-white on a thermostat call and lights the gas as the valve opens. HSI elements are brittle silicon-carbide or silicon-nitride and are the most common no-heat failure point — they crack, develop hairline fractures, or burn out, so the burners never light and the furnace locks out. The VR8205S gas valve meters and shuts off gas to the burner manifold under control of the ignition board.

Compatibility

Fits the Tempstar T8MPN050B12B1 gas furnace and related ICP/Heil/Tempstar/Comfortmaker furnaces using a hot surface igniter and the Honeywell VR8205S snap-mount gas valve. Verify igniter mounting bracket and valve gas-line/connector orientation against your original parts.

Installation Guide

  1. Safety First — Shut off the gas supply, disconnect power at the switch and breaker, and verify zero voltage with a multimeter.
  2. Access — Remove the furnace burner-compartment service panel.
  3. Document — Photograph the igniter bracket position and all gas valve wiring and gas connections before disconnecting.
  4. Remove — Unplug the igniter and unscrew its bracket (handle by the ceramic base only — never touch the element). For the valve, disconnect wiring and gas unions and remove the old valve.
  5. Install — Mount the new igniter at the factory gap to the burner, then install the valve, reconnect gas and wiring per your photo, and leak-check all gas joints with soap solution.
  6. Test — Restore gas and power, run a heat call, and confirm the igniter glows, the valve opens, and burners light cleanly.

Signs You Need a Replacement

  • Igniter never glows on a heat call (no ignition, furnace lockout)
  • Visible crack or fracture in the igniter element
  • Furnace ignites then short-cycles or fails on flame proving
  • Gas valve fails to open/close or chatters during ignition

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this Igniter fit my Tempstar T8MPN050B12B1 — HSI with VR8205S Gas Valve | Ships Today?
Yes. This is the factory-specified OEM igniter for the Tempstar T8MPN050B12B1 — HSI with VR8205S Gas Valve | Ships Today. It is a direct drop-in replacement that fits without modification. Always verify the model number on your equipment nameplate before ordering.
How do I replace the igniter on my Tempstar T8MPN050B12B1 — HSI with VR8205S Gas Valve | Ships Today?
Difficulty: Medium (20–30 min)
Step 1: Turn off power and gas. Step 2: Open furnace panel. Step 3: Locate igniter near burners. Step 4: Disconnect two-wire plug. Step 5: Remove mounting screw. Step 6: Install new igniter — do NOT touch element with fingers. Step 7: Reconnect, close panel, restore power/gas.
My furnace won’t ignite. What part is bad?
Furnace won’t ignite after the draft inducer runs = failed igniter. The hot surface igniter should glow bright orange within 60 seconds. No glow = cracked/burned out. Weak glow = degrading. Average lifespan: 3–7 years. Replacement: $15–$40 DIY.
Is this igniter compatible with Bryant or Payne too?
Many Tempstar parts are cross-compatible with Bryant and Payne since all three brands are manufactured by Carrier Global Corporation. The same physical part is often used across brand labels with different model numbers. To verify: check your Bryant or Payne equipment service manual for cross-compatible part numbers, or email info@nationalhvacparts.com with your model number.
Should I use OEM or aftermarket for my Tempstar igniter?
OEM recommended for reliability and warranty compatibility. OEM parts match exact factory specifications for proper fit, performance, and safety. While aftermarket alternatives cost less upfront, the risk of improper fit and reduced lifespan usually makes OEM the better value long-term.
How fast does National HVAC Parts ship?
