Overview

When the thermostat calls for cooling, the 24V control coil pulls the contactor's main contacts closed, sending line voltage to the outdoor unit. Over years of cycling, the contact points pit, arc, and weld, while the coil can burn open. A failed contactor is one of the most common no-cool service calls.
