This OEM contactor (part #1172472) is the single-pole, 30-amp, 24-volt switching relay used in the Tempstar TSA518GKA101 condensing unit. The contactor is an electromagnetic switch: when the 24V coil energizes from the thermostat call, it pulls the contacts closed and sends line voltage to the compressor and condenser fan motor. The factory shunt protects the coil circuit. Contactors are one of the most common failure points in air conditioning systems because the contacts arc every cycle, eventually pitting, welding, or burning. Symptoms of a failing contactor include a unit that won't start, a loud buzzing or chattering at the contactor, an outdoor fan and compressor that run continuously even when the thermostat is satisfied, or visibly burned and pitted contact points.
