It steps down line voltage to the 24-volt control circuit that energizes the contactor, defrost board, and reversing valve coil (OEM 1172574 / 1175622). Rated at 40VA, it supplies stable control power to every 24V accessory on the unit. When a transformer fails, the entire low-voltage circuit goes dead — the thermostat loses power, the contactor won't pull in, and the system will not start.
