Overview

When the thermostat calls for cooling or heating, the 24V coil pulls the contacts closed, sending line voltage to the compressor and condenser fan motor. Contactors are high-wear parts — the contacts arc every cycle and eventually pit, weld, or corrode. A failed contactor causes a unit that won't start, chatters loudly, or runs continuously because the contacts are stuck closed.
