Overview

The contactor is the high-voltage switch that powers the compressor and condenser fan. When the thermostat calls for cooling, the 24V coil pulls the contacts closed, sending line voltage to the compressor. Contactors are one of the most common HVAC failure points — their contacts pit, burn, and weld over thousands of cycles, and the coil can fail open.
