The genuine Goodman 20162904 Primary Limit Temperature Control is the main high-limit safety switch for the Goodman ACVC960804CNAA 96% AFUE two-stage variable-speed gas furnace. Mounted on the heat-exchanger / blower bulkhead, it continuously monitors supply-air temperature and opens the burner circuit if the furnace overheats — typically from a dirty filter, blocked ductwork, or a failed blower motor. A failed limit control is a common cause of a furnace that lights then shuts off (short-cycling) on a high-limit lockout.
The OEM 20162904 is calibrated to the exact trip and reset temperatures specified for this heat exchanger. Because this is a flame-safety component, we strongly recommend the genuine Goodman part — a generic limit with the wrong setpoint can either nuisance-trip or, worse, fail to protect against a genuine overheat condition.
Moderate (3/5). Requires removing the burner/blower access panel, disconnecting two spade terminals, and unscrewing the limit from its bracket. Turn off gas and electrical power at the disconnect before servicing. Typical install time: 15–25 minutes. If the furnace repeatedly trips a new limit, diagnose airflow before condemning the control.
