The bracket holds the flame sensor rod in precise position over the burner so the control board can confirm flame is present after ignition. When the bracket is corroded, cracked, or warped from heat cycling, the sensor drifts out of the flame envelope — the board reads a weak or absent microamp signal and shuts the gas valve as a safety lockout.
