A hard start kit (like the Supco SPP5 or SST series) adds a start capacitor and potential relay to a compressor circuit, significantly reducing the time and current required for the compressor to reach operating speed. They are recommended when a compressor has difficulty starting on low voltage, when powering from a generator, or as a preventive measure on older compressors showing signs of hard starting.
Three specifications are required: MFD (microfarad) rating, voltage rating, and physical configuration (round vs oval, terminal type). The MFD must match within ±6% of the original rating. The voltage rating must be equal to or greater than the original. Physical size must fit the mounting space. Our capacitor selector filters by all three parameters.
