HVAC Diagnostic Guide HIGH URGENCY

Furnace Not Blowing Air

Furnace burners light but no warm air comes out of the vents.

Quick Check Before You Call a Pro

  1. Check thermostat fan setting — try setting to ON and see if blower runs at all
  2. Replace the air filter — extremely clogged filters can trip safety limits
  3. Confirm the front panel access door is fully closed (door switch can cut power)
  4. Listen at the indoor unit — is the blower motor making any sound at all?

01 · Most Likely Causes (Ranked)

35%

Failed Blower Motor

What's happening

The blower motor that pushes heated air through the ducts has failed. Burners light, heat exchanger warms, but no air movement means the heat just shuts the system down on high limit.

How to check

Set thermostat fan to ON. If blower doesn't spin at all, motor is suspect. Try gently spinning the blower wheel by hand (power OFF) — if stiff or won't turn, bearings are seized. Burning smell from indoor unit = motor windings.

How to fix

Motor replacement. Match HP, RPM, voltage, frame size, shaft length, and rotation direction. $200-500 part. PSC and ECM motors require different replacement procedures.

Failed Blower Capacitor

What's happening

PSC blower motors need a run capacitor to start and operate. Failed cap means motor won't start. ECM (variable speed) motors don't have this issue.

How to check

Locate the blower capacitor near the motor. Visual: bulging top, oily leak, scorch marks. Multimeter test: capacitance reading more than 6% below MFD rating means failed.

How to fix

Replace with matching MFD and voltage rating. $15-30 part. Always discharge capacitor before touching terminals.

Tripped Limit Switch

What's happening

The high-limit safety switch shut off power to prevent overheating. Limit may have failed closed or may be opening from genuine overheat (no airflow → heat builds up).

How to check

Multimeter test across the limit switch terminals. Continuity = good. Open circuit when furnace is cool = failed limit. Tripped limits sometimes self-reset after cooling.

How to fix

Replace limit switch ($25-50 part). Address the root cause — clean filter, check blower operation. Don't bypass the limit switch even temporarily; it's a critical safety device.

Door/Panel Safety Switch Open

What's happening

Furnace blower panel has a safety switch that cuts power if the door is not properly seated. Common after service or filter changes when the panel isn't fully closed.

How to check

Push firmly on the front blower panel. Listen for a click. If furnace starts working immediately, the door switch was the issue.

How to fix

Reseat the panel. Check that all screws are tight and gasket isn't damaged. If switch itself is faulty, replacement is $10-20 — but never bypass it.

Failed Control Board

What's happening

The furnace's control board has failed to send power to the blower motor. Often shows erratic blink codes or no LED at all.

How to check

Visual inspection: burn marks on the board, swollen capacitors, loose connections. Multimeter at the blower terminal: should show 120V during heat call. If no voltage despite proper ignition sequence, board is suspect.

How to fix

Replace control board. Match exact manufacturer part number. $150-400 part. Universal boards rarely work properly.

Broken Belt (Older Belt-Drive Furnaces)

What's happening

Very old furnaces (pre-1990s) use a belt between the motor and blower wheel. Belts crack and break with age.

How to check

Open the blower compartment. If you see a belt connecting the motor to the blower assembly, inspect for breaks, fraying, or excessive slack. Most modern furnaces are direct-drive (no belt).

How to fix

Replace belt. Match by length and width. $10-20 part. While you're in there, check pulley alignment and tension.

02 · Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my furnace heat up but no air comes out?
The blower motor isn't running. Most common: failed blower motor (35%), failed blower capacitor (20%), or tripped limit switch (15%). The burners can light without the blower, but you won't get any heat delivered to your rooms.
How long can I run a furnace without the blower?
You shouldn't. Without airflow, the heat exchanger overheats and can crack — which is a serious carbon monoxide risk. The high-limit switch will shut everything down within minutes, but repeated thermal cycling damages components.
Why does my furnace blower only work sometimes?
Intermittent blower operation usually points to a failing motor (worn bearings causing inconsistent startup), a weak capacitor, or a control board issue. Have a tech diagnose — intermittent issues become permanent failures.
Can I bypass the door safety switch?
Don't. The door switch prevents the blower from running when the panel is removed for service — protecting service techs from injury. Bypassing it is dangerous and against code in many jurisdictions.
