HVAC Diagnostic Guide MEDIUM URGENCY

AC Clicking Sound

AC making clicking sounds — either rapid clicks, intermittent clicks, or clicking without starting.

Quick Check Before You Call a Pro

  1. Where is the click? Outdoor unit, indoor unit, or thermostat?
  2. Single click on startup is normal (contactor pulling in). Rapid clicks = problem
  3. Note if AC actually starts or just clicks without running
  4. Listen for buzzing along with the clicking — different diagnosis

01 · Most Likely Causes (Ranked)

35%

Failing Contactor (Chattering)

What's happening

Contactor coil is weak or contacts are pitted. Tries to engage repeatedly without holding — produces rapid click-click-click. Eventually welds shut or fails open completely.

How to check

Open the outdoor electrical panel (power OFF first). Look for the contactor — small black box with copper terminals. Visible pitting, burn marks, or melted plastic = failing.

How to fix

Replace contactor with matching coil voltage (24V) and amp rating. $20-50 part. Discharge nearby capacitor before working in the panel.

Weak 24V Transformer

What's happening

Transformer provides 24V to the contactor coil. Weak transformer can't hold the contactor in — coil energizes briefly, contactor clicks in, then drops out, repeats.

How to check

Multimeter test at thermostat terminals (R and C). Should read 24-28V AC. Below 22V = weak transformer.

How to fix

Replace transformer with matching VA rating (typically 40VA for residential). $25-50 part. Often easier than repairing the contactor.

Thermostat Wiring Issue

What's happening

Loose or damaged thermostat wire causes intermittent signal to the contactor. The system tries to start, loses signal, tries again — clicking pattern.

How to check

Wiggle the thermostat wires at the thermostat base AND at the control board. If clicking changes or stops, wiring is the issue.

How to fix

Reseat all thermostat wires firmly. Replace damaged sections of thermostat cable. If wires pass through walls and may be damaged inside, running new cable is the long-term fix.

Failed Capacitor (Compressor Trying)

What's happening

Compressor tries to start, fails (no capacitor torque), trips its internal overload, cools down, tries again — clicking is the compressor overload protector resetting.

How to check

Outdoor unit fan may run while clicks come from the compressor. Click interval is longer (every 30-60 seconds vs rapid). Test capacitor with multimeter.

How to fix

Replace capacitor matching MFD and voltage. $15-40 part. Always discharge first.

Low Refrigerant (Pressure Switch Cycling)

What's happening

Low refrigerant trips the low-pressure safety switch. System shuts off, pressure equalizes, switch resets, system starts, low pressure trips again — clicking pattern of the contactor cycling.

How to check

Long clicks 1-3 minutes apart. AC starts running but stops shortly after. Visible ice on the suction line.

How to fix

Tech finds and repairs leak, recharges. Just topping off refrigerant is illegal and won't fix the underlying leak.

Thermostat with Quick Cycling Bug

What's happening

Some thermostats have a 'minimum off time' or 'compressor protection delay' that prevents rapid cycling. If that feature failed, the thermostat keeps issuing call signals.

How to check

Replace thermostat or restore to factory defaults. Check for low battery warnings on battery-powered thermostats.

How to fix

Most thermostat menus have a 'minimum cycle time' setting (default 3-5 minutes). Verify it's enabled. If thermostat is malfunctioning, replace.

02 · Frequently Asked Questions

Is one click normal when AC starts?
Yes — that's the contactor closing to send power to the compressor. A single solid click followed by the unit running normally is healthy. Repeated clicking is not.
Why does my AC click but not turn on?
Most commonly: failed capacitor (compressor tries to start but can't get enough torque, then overload trips), or failing contactor (won't hold long enough to start the compressor). Both are inexpensive to fix.
Can I run my AC if it's clicking?
Brief startup click: yes. Rapid clicking without operation: no — shut it off. Each click cycle stresses the contactor and motor. Continuing to run can weld the contactor closed or burn out the compressor windings.
Why does my AC click at the thermostat too?
Some mechanical thermostats audibly click when they actuate the relay inside. Normal at the start and end of cooling cycles. Rapid clicking from the thermostat itself = thermostat is failing or has a power issue.
