How to Choose the Right Furnace Burner

Furnace burners mix natural gas or propane with air and ignite the mixture to create heat. When burners fail, you'll see yellow or orange flames instead of steady blue, hear booming or rumbling sounds at startup, or notice soot buildup around the burner compartment — all signs of incomplete combustion that waste energy and can produce carbon monoxide.

Types of Furnace Burners

In-Shot Burners are the most common type in modern furnaces. Each burner tube fires directly into its own heat exchanger cell. They're individually replaceable — you don't need to replace the entire assembly if one tube fails. Most Carrier, Goodman, and Lennox furnaces from 1990 onward use in-shot burners.

Ribbon Burners use a flat, perforated metal strip to distribute the flame evenly. Found in older furnaces and some high-efficiency models. These are typically replaced as a complete assembly.

Burner Orifices are the small brass fittings that meter gas flow into each burner tube. If your burner produces a lazy yellow flame after cleaning, the orifice may be clogged or the wrong size. Natural gas and propane use different orifice sizes — never swap without changing the orifice.

Cleaning vs Replacing

Burner tubes can often be cleaned with a wire brush and compressed air — rust scale and dust are the usual culprits. However, if the burner has cracks, warping, or holes burned through the metal, replacement is required. A cracked burner is a carbon monoxide risk and should never be run.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my furnace flame yellow instead of blue?

A yellow or orange flame indicates incomplete combustion — the burner isn't getting enough air or the orifice is partially clogged. Clean the burner tubes with a wire brush and compressed air. If the flame is still yellow after cleaning, check the orifice size (especially if the furnace was recently converted from natural gas to propane) and inspect for cracks in the heat exchanger.

Can I clean furnace burners instead of replacing them?

Yes — most of the time cleaning is sufficient. Remove the burners, brush rust and debris from the tubes with a wire brush, blow out the ports with compressed air, and clean the orifices. Replace only if you see cracks, warping, holes burned through the metal, or heavy corrosion that won't brush off.

What causes a furnace to boom or bang when it lights?

A delayed ignition boom means gas is accumulating in the combustion chamber before the igniter lights it. Common causes: dirty burners restricting initial flame spread, a weak or failing igniter that takes too long to glow, or a gas valve opening too slowly. Clean the burners first — it's the most common and cheapest fix.

Are natural gas and propane burner orifices the same?

No — propane orifices have smaller holes than natural gas orifices because propane burns at higher BTU per cubic foot. Using a natural gas orifice with propane produces a dangerously oversized flame. Always use the correct orifice for your fuel type.

How many burner tubes does my furnace have?

The number of burner tubes matches the number of heat exchanger cells — typically 2 for 40,000 BTU, 3 for 60,000 BTU, and 4 for 80,000-100,000 BTU furnaces. Each tube is individually replaceable on in-shot burner systems.
