HVAC Transformer Testing: 24V Troubleshooting

The 24V Transformer Role

The 24V transformer steps down line voltage to 24V control voltage for thermostats, gas valves, contactors, and control boards. Without proper 24V power, your HVAC system cannot operate.

Failure Symptoms

  • Blank thermostat display
  • System unresponsive to thermostat commands
  • Repeated blown fuses
  • Humming sound from transformer

Testing Procedure

  1. Turn off power to the system
  2. Locate the transformer (usually near the control board)
  3. Set multimeter to AC voltage
  4. Test input voltage (should be 120V or 240V)
  5. Test output voltage (should be 24V AC)

Common Problems

  • Shorted thermostat wires causing overload
  • Failed contactor coil drawing excess current
  • Water damage from condensate leaks
