What's Driving the Increases
Copper (+67% since 2020)
Every motor, transformer, and compressor contains copper windings. Copper hit record highs in 2024-2025 driven by EV manufacturing demand and data center construction. This single material drives the price increase for 60% of HVAC parts.
Semiconductors (+35% effective cost)
Control boards use microcontrollers that were in severe shortage during 2021-2023. Prices have normalized but haven't returned to 2020 levels. Manufacturers also redesigned boards with newer, more expensive chipsets during the shortage.
Refrigerant Transition
The R-410A production ban (January 2025) has added cost throughout the supply chain. Compressors designed for R-454B require different materials and tighter tolerances. The transition cost is baked into every new-design component.
