The HVAC Heat Map: Which Parts Fail Most in Every U.S. Climate Zone

Not all HVAC parts fail equally across the country. A capacitor in Houston faces a fundamentally different life than one in Minneapolis. We mapped our order data against the seven IECC climate zones to reveal which parts break fastest in which climates — and why.

The Key Finding

Climate is the #1 predictor of which HVAC part fails first — more than brand, age, or maintenance history. A system in Zone 2 (Gulf Coast) replaces capacitors at 2.3x the rate of Zone 5 (Upper Midwest), while Zone 5 replaces igniters at 3.1x the Zone 2 rate.

Zone 1-2: Hot-Humid (Miami, Houston, New Orleans, Jacksonville)

Gulf Coast insight: Houston and South Florida account for the highest per-capita capacitor orders in the country. If you live in Zone 1-2, keep a spare capacitor on hand — it's not a matter of if, but when.

Zone 2-3: Hot-Dry (Phoenix, Las Vegas, Tucson, El Paso)

The Takeaway for Homeowners

Your preventive maintenance strategy should be climate-specific:

  • Hot climates: Replace capacitors every 3-4 years preventively. Keep a spare on hand. Annual condenser coil cleaning is non-negotiable.
  • Cold climates: Clean the flame sensor every fall. Replace igniters at year 4-5 (don't wait for failure). Have the heat exchanger inspected annually after year 10.
  • Mixed climates: Focus on control board surge protection and biannual system maintenance at each season change.
  • All climates: Change the air filter monthly. It's the single cheapest way to extend the life of every component.
