Younger homeowners are reshaping the HVAC service model. Under-35 homeowners are 3.7x more likely to order a part online and attempt DIY than those over 55. The HVAC industry's traditional model — "call us and we'll diagnose, source, and install" — is being disrupted from the bottom up by a generation that Googles everything and trusts YouTube tutorials.
What This Means for the Industry
The data points to a structural shift: homeowners increasingly want to buy parts directly and either install themselves or hire labor-only. The traditional bundled service model (markup parts 200-300%, bundle with labor) faces growing pressure from informed consumers who know what a capacitor costs.
For HVAC companies, the opportunity is in education and trust — not in hiding parts costs. Companies that help homeowners understand their systems will earn the complex jobs (compressor replacement, system installation) while losing the simple ones (capacitor, igniter, flame sensor) to DIY.
