Heat Pump Reversing Valve Troubleshooting

What the Reversing Valve Does

The reversing valve switches between heating and cooling modes by redirecting refrigerant flow. Most systems energize the solenoid for cooling mode.

Common Symptoms

  • Heat pump stuck in one mode
  • System blows cool air in heat mode
  • Hissing sound from valve area
  • High head pressure in both modes

Testing Steps

  1. Check solenoid coil with multimeter (should show resistance)
  2. Apply 24V directly to solenoid to test shifting
  3. Feel temperature difference across valve ports
  4. Listen for click when energizing coil

Replacement Considerations

Reversing valve replacement requires recovering refrigerant and brazing. This is typically a job for licensed HVAC technicians. Shop our selection of OEM reversing valves and solenoid coils.
