The Goodman 20162904 Primary Limit Temperature Control is a genuine OEM high-limit safety switch built for the Goodman VMS80604BNAA gas furnace. Mounted on the heat exchanger's supply-air side, this limit control continuously monitors plenum temperature and cuts power to the gas valve if the furnace overheats — typically caused by a dirty filter, blocked ductwork, or a failing blower. When the primary limit trips repeatedly or fails open, the furnace won't fire; when it fails closed, the safety protection is lost.
This genuine Goodman OEM limit control is calibrated to the exact trip and reset temperatures your furnace board expects. Generic limits with mismatched setpoints can nuisance-trip or, worse, fail to protect the heat exchanger. For a life-safety component, OEM is strongly advised.
Turn off power at the furnace, remove the two mounting screws, disconnect the wire terminals, and install the replacement in the same orientation. A multimeter continuity check confirms the old switch is at fault. Most handy homeowners can complete this in 15–30 minutes, but call a pro if repeated trips point to an airflow or heat-exchanger issue.
