The Goodman 20162904 Primary Limit Temperature Control is a genuine OEM high-limit safety switch that protects your furnace from dangerous overheating. Mounted on the heat exchanger / vestibule panel, it continuously monitors supply-air temperature and shuts off the gas valve if the furnace exceeds its safe operating limit — a common response to a dirty filter, blocked ducts, or a failed blower. This control is a direct-fit component for the AMVC960804CNAA modulating variable-speed 96% AFUE gas furnace.
Limit switches are trip-point calibrated to a specific furnace design. The genuine 20162904 opens and closes at the exact factory temperature setpoint. A mismatched generic limit can nuisance-trip (short cycling) or, worse, fail to trip — defeating a critical safety function. For any safety-rated control, OEM is strongly recommended.
Moderate (3/5). Requires removing furnace panels, disconnecting two spade terminals, and unscrewing the switch bracket. Shut off gas and electrical power first. If you are not comfortable working around the gas valve and heat exchanger, hire a licensed HVAC technician.
Fitment note: Confirm your exact furnace model — limit setpoints vary by cabinet size and BTU rating.
