The Goodman 20162904 Primary Limit Temperature Control is a genuine OEM high-limit safety switch for the Goodman/Amana AMVC960603BNAA gas furnace. Mounted at the heat exchanger / supply-air plenum, it continuously monitors discharge temperature and opens the burner circuit if the furnace overheats — the most common cause being restricted airflow from a dirty filter, blocked ducts, or a failing blower.
Unlike the manual-reset rollout switch, the primary limit is typically an auto-reset control: it re-closes once temperature returns to a safe range. A furnace that short-cycles on heat, or one where the burners light but the blower/limit behavior is erratic, often points to a limit control that has drifted out of calibration and needs replacement.
OEM vs. Generic: The OEM 20162904 ships with the correct trip/reset set points and mounting bracket geometry for this furnace. A generic snap-disc with the wrong temperature rating will either nuisance-trip during normal high-fire operation or allow unsafe overheating — this is a safety part where OEM is the right call.
Install difficulty: Easy–Moderate (2/5). Shut off power and gas, note the wire routing, remove the two mounting screws and spade connectors, and install the replacement in the identical position and orientation. Test through a full heat cycle before returning to service.
