The Goodman 20162904 Primary Limit Temperature Control is the genuine OEM high-limit safety device for the AMS80804BXAD furnace. Mounted on the heat-exchanger bulkhead, this primary limit continuously senses supply-air temperature and opens the control circuit if the furnace exceeds its safe operating range — cutting the gas valve to protect the heat exchanger, wiring, and cabinet from heat damage. Unlike a manual-reset switch, the primary limit is typically an auto-reset control that closes again once temperatures return to normal, so it also cycles the burners on airflow faults.
The OEM 20162904 uses the exact trip setpoint, sensing-element length, and mounting flange Goodman specified for this furnace. A generic limit with the wrong temperature rating or probe depth can nuisance-trip on every call for heat, or worse, fail to protect against a genuine overheat. For this safety-critical control, the factory OEM part is the correct and recommended replacement.
Easy (1/5). Disconnect power, note terminal orientation, unplug the wire leads, remove the two mounting screws, and install the new limit flush against the heat-exchanger panel so the probe seats correctly. Reconnect and run a heat cycle to confirm normal operation. About 15–20 minutes. If it keeps tripping, investigate airflow before replacing again.
